Demoted Chewa chiefs to hold demonstrations in Dowa

By: Vincent Gunde.

Concerned Chewa chiefs who were elevated to Sub Traditional Authorities during the reign of former President Dr. Joyce Banda and were demoted by President Peter Mutharika’s government, will on 19th March, 2020 hold peaceful demonstrations to present their petition to His Excellency the State President of the Republic of Malawi, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika through District Commissioner for Dowa, Alex Mdooko.

The Government of madam Dr. Joyce Banda elevated 22 chiefs across the country and 9 of these were from Dowa district alone .
The chiefs were demoted by President Mutharika without giving them valid reasons, a development which they sees politics played a part in both their promotions and demotions.

In the letter dated 4th March, 2020, to Dowa District Commissioner with a copy to Officer in Charge, Dowa police station, the concerned chiefs says the peaceful demonstration march will start from Red Cross turn off to the offices of the council at 11: 30 a.m, expressing hope that police will provide security on the day.

Speaking in an interview, Bwalo la Chewa Foundation ( BOLA – CEFO) National Executive Director, Reverend Flywell Somanje said seven chiefs and others who were on the line up for elevations have been forwarding their concerns to government for about 20 years but seems government has paid a deaf ear saying this time around, President Mutharika being the big chief will clarify their demotions.

Rev. Somanje said chiefs such as Mkanthama( Dowa), Chawala( Ntchisi), Mgululira( Mchinji), Chimphiri, Kaliswa, Phamba, Chikudzu, Chikwinde, Makobwa and Kachigunda, (all of Dowa), have had their concerns to government time and again but to this day, they are still suffering for no promotions.

He said Dowa is a big district and has vast areas for one chief to look after his subjects in initiating development projects hence a great need to share the land to fellow chiefs.

The Rev. Claims that out of the seven Traditional Authorities of the district, its only Chief Dzoole ( Chewa) ,who accepted to share his land to fellow Chewa chiefs of Kayembe and Chakhaza while Ngoni Traditional Authorities of Mponela, Mkukula, Chiwere and Msakambewa, do not want their land to be shared.
