President Arthur Peter Muntharika has dismissed claims that he won 2014 elections due to the influence of Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima.

Chilima made the claim at a recent political rally in Dedza that President Mutharika won the elections due to his presence on a ballot paper.

But speaking during a whistle stop tour in Kasungu on his way to Mzuzu, Mutharika said Chilima only came into fold two months to the elections.

Muntharika said the Democratic Progressive Party(DPP)won because it laid a proper ground work ahead of the polls.

“Other political parties warned me about making this stop saying that they own Kasungu and that no one will welcome me but am really impressed as you still have trust in me and DPP,” said Muntharika.

President Mutharika then assured people of his commitment to develop the country and ending poverty through programmes such as Social cash transfer and the Malata,Cement subsidy initiative.

Senior Chief Kaomba in his remarks commended Muntharika for developing the district but urged the president to assist households affected by hunger which has struck Kasungu.

“As a district Kasungu is facing water shortages due poor rains and we hope government is going to address the problem as soon as possible”said Kaomba.

President Peter Muntharika is expected to attend a graduation ceremony of the University of Livingstonia on saturday at Mzuzu Stadium.
