Area 18 interchange to be ready by March 2020
Roads Authority says the much awaited Area 18 interchange connector will be ready by March 2020.
Area 18 Interchange is part of K10 Billion Project which involved construction of dual carriage way road from Malawi Parliament to Bingu Internatinal Stadium with dedicated bicycle lane and pedestrian walk way, and construction of drainage.
RA chief Engineer Joel Longwe was speaking in Lilongwe to a group of journalists who converged at the connector to appreciate the progress.
Longwe said the work is currently at 48 percent to its completion level.
Longwe said in order to ensure speed and safety, RA in conjunction with the contractor Motor Engel will soon be closing the road from Area 18 round about to Magalasi House.
“We are closing in order to ensure safety of the motorists and on top of that we want to create more space for our contractor to complete digging.” He said.
The Engineer said in order to ensure safety and give space for the contractor, RA has opened two diversions.
Journalists were taken into both diversions for them to appreciate.
The first diversion connects Lingadzi Bridge M1 Road to City Centre via Seventh day Adventist Church.
The second diversion is from Parliament to Area 10 near Malawi College Accountancy.
According to Engineer Longwe, the project is under the ministry of Transport but funded by Roads Fund Administration but implemented by Roads Authority.
The consultant of the project is L. Gravam Consulting Engineers.
Longwe has since appealed to motorists to follow the and abide to the road signs.
