Campaign closes in LL South by polls

Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has announced closure of campaign in Lilongwe South constituency where MEC is holding the by Elections there.

In a statement signed by MEC Chief Elections officer Sam Alfandika, the campaign ends on Tuesday January 28, 2020 at 6 Am.

“The Malawi Electoral Commission reminds all contesting candidates,
political parties, media houses and the general public that campaign for
January 30, 2020 by-election in Lilongwe South Constituency ends on Tuesday, 28th January, at 6.00AM.” Reads the document in part.

MEC has reminded all stakeholders that it is a violation of the law to campaign
outside this period and all those found guilty will face the due process of
law.

According to MEC after this deadline no one will be allowed to go around soliciting, canvassing, or posturing for votes, directly or indirectly.

“The Commission wishes to emphasize that candidates and their supporters
or agents will not be allowed to campaign or drive around hooting or with loud speakers playing campaign songs or any messages after the deadline.” Reads the statement.

According to the statement all candidates that are sponsoring football trophies, conducting charity
works, distributing relief items will not be allowed after the closure.

According to MEC no one will be allowed to do public or charity work or
donation or hold a prize presentation for a competition after the official
campaign period.

MEC has also ordered leaders of various faiths not canvass for a candidate during any service of worship and should also be on the guard because their worship
services can be used for campaign and the clergy are also advised to
avoid projecting candidates after the end of period for campaign.

In an interview, DPP Secretary General Grizeldar wa Jeffery said the campaign has gone on very well.

Wa Jeffry said there was no element of violence and any party was campaigning freely.

MCP candidate Peter Dimba said thw campaign has gone very well.

“Well, the campaign has gone on perfectly well.In any case, it was a continuation of the campaign that has run on for almost a year now and as MCP, we are confident , just as we have always had confidence in defending this seat. He said.
