CDEDI demands Mutharika’s immediate attention on Malawi challenges

The Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives ( CDEDI) says the challenges which Malawi as a country is facing require President Mutharika’s immediate attention and has demanded him to address the nation within 48 hours from his arrival from the UK_ Africa investment summit held in London, United Kingdom.

On his arrival from the UK at Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe, President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika said the problems that the country is facing are temporary and will soon be over saying he is ready to build this country so that after five years, their should be a change urging Malawians to remain united and focused on development.

The within 48 hours address to the nation demand is contained in an open letter signed by CDEDI Acting Executive Director, Sylvester Namiwa.

In the letter, CDEDI says Mutharika’s advisor, Mwayi Kamuyambeni at a political rally threatened to deal with HRDC chairperson, Timothy Pagonachi Mtambo after the court ruling describing this as a threat to the hard won democracy in Malawi and shows that DPP is wielding intimidations against those holding different opinions.

The letter says the recent revelation that government decided to cut MDF allowances from $1,100 to $900 per month for soldiers on a UN peace keeping mission in DRC is very unfortunate and regrettable development to the soldiers who deserve better than this allowance with the reasons behind it as not justifiable.

In the letter, CDEDI says people from Thyolo East , the Constituency where President Mutharika comes from, are angry with government because they are currently surviving on pumpkin leaves , with many families not affording to buy maize from ADMARC which has rationed its selling to only 10 kilograms.

…….in Mchinji, angry people off – loaded maize from a truck which was allegedly going to Thyolo…..reads the letter in part.

It says MBC is inciting hatred by branding HRDC, a terrorist group saying this is not only unethical and unprofessional as it poses a threat to the country’s peace and national unity and is one of the steps of running the MBC as a ruling DPP elite.

In the letter, CDEDI also highlighted on teachers salary delays which paralysed the education system across the country with learners and students turning violence leading to damages of property.

CDEDI says the Zomba Magistrate, Benedicto Chitsakamile released a bribery suspect to the constitutional court judges under dubious circumstances saying he is receiving alleged threats on his life.
