The Centre for Democracy and Development Initiatives( CDEDI), has called upon President Peter Mutharika in his capacity as Commander in Chief of the armed forces in the country to institute an investigation to tell Malawians what transpired for the state agents, Police and Prison to open fire at each other.

CDEDI is demanding a clear and definitive explaination from the Acting Inspector General of Police, Duncan Mwapasa and Minister of Homeland Security, Hon. Nicholas Dausi MP for someone to be held responsible and accountable saying these two entities operate as directorates and they are independent of each other and one would wonder as to who instructed the Malawi Police Service to invade the prison territory.

The organization says the unfortunate events that are taking place in the country point to a lawlessness nation and this poses a threat to both peace and security of the citizens seeing those that are supposed to protect them resort to fighting each other.

This is contained in a statement signed by the organization’s Acting Executive Director, Sylvester Namiwa with the subject Malawians are living in fear, Mr. President.

In the statement, CDEDI challenges President Mutharika to rise to the occassion and provide strategic leadership as exposed to the current free for all kind of situation.

The organization observes that the Immigration, Prison and Police fall under one line ministry, Homeland Security formerly known as Home Affairs, they are children of the same family and it was not only shocking but, unexpected for the police and prison to exchange ammunitions.

The statenent says CDEDI believes that someone, somewhere in government is not doing his/ her job correctly with videos and pictures that gone viral on social media, can safely conclude that Malawians are not in safe hands, such incidents have instilled fear and panic among peace loving Malawians.”

Should the president remain silent on this matter just as it has remain his tradition, Malawians will safely conclude that lawlessness in the country is as a result of the president’s failure to hold the reign of power making Malawi, a free for all kind of nation”, reads part of the statement.

CDEDI says it is convinced that the striking prison junior staff have genuine concerns that a listening and caring leader in the name of President Peter Mutharika would not wait until gunshots are heard inorder for him to listen to their cries.
