As the country is observing the 16 days of Activism against Gender Based Violence ( GBV), Senior Chief Kayembe of Dowa has accused some village heads of charging money to the victims before their cases are heard saying this is derailing all efforts of ending Gender Based Violence in the district.
Dowa, a district composed of a mixture of tribes commonly the Ngoni’s and Chewa’s through intermarriages, has its people who differ in their cultural values, a development making it toppling the list of districts in Malawi where Gender Based Violence( GBV) is common.
Bwalo la Chewa Foundation ( BOLA- CEFO), a grouping of all the Chewas in Malawi under His Royal Highness Paramount chief Dr. Lundu in its recent press statement called for the re – introduction of traditional courts arguing that family issues could be sorted out by chiefs themselves before police and courts.
It’s Chief Executive Director, Reverend Flywell Somanje said justice in Malawi is favouring only those who have money leaving out the majority suffering.
The Chewa grouping said it is disappointing to note that some family issues are being handled by police officers claiming that some of these are not married at all a development which is negatively affecting marriage as a permanence and life long commitment to one another .
Speaking during the Dowa district launch of the 16 days of Activism against GBV held at Senga school ground in the area of traditional authority Mkukula , Senior Chief Kayembe, pleaded with the village heads not to charge any money to the families coming to report GBV for the battle to be won in the district.
Chief Kayembe, who is also national Ambassador for GBV, appealed to men not to suffer in silence but to report to various institutions observing that most men tend to shun reporting GBV but suffering in silence.
She said Dowa district is common with GBV urging all the people to make use of the various reporting institutions for the perpetrators to be brought to book and receive justice.
The chief thanked organizations implementing various interventions in the district for complimenting government efforts to end GBV in the district.
