Malawi loses 4 chiefs in 3 weeks

Ministry of Local Government has bemoaned the death of four chiefs in 3 weeks saying it is a big blow to the development of the nation.
Deputy Minister of Local Government Hon. Halima Daud said this on Monday during the burial ceremony of Senior Chief Kaluluma of Kasungu District.
The senior chief, real name Oscar Gladson Kaluluma Phiri, died on Saturday, 23 January 2021 after a long battle with heart failure and high blood pressure.
He was born on 1st January, 1927 at Nthembe Village in Kasungu and was installed as a traditional leader in 1960 after the death of his uncle Chilembwe.
He was elevated to senior chief on 18th September, 2007.
The departed senior chief is survived by a wife, 14 children and 45 grand children.
Burial of the remains of Senior Chief Kaluluma took place on Monday, 25th January, 2021 at his Nthembwe Headquarters in Kasungu.
The other three chiefs who have died in the past three weeks include Senior Chief Bibi Kuluwunda, Chief Njolomole and Chief Nkula of Salima, Ntcheu and Machinga Districts respectively.
