Some ADMARC Clerks cashing on hungry people
By Kondanani Chilimnthaka
The hunger that has hit most parts of Malawi has left the needy households being victims as maize is too high on the local market.
Going around different markets, we found out that a bag of 50kgs is going at not less than K20,000 with a 20kg pail going at K8,000 or above.
This is the situation that has left almost all Malawians at the crossroads considering that even those in towns, cities and well to do people have dependants somewhere who at this time are looking for food support from such individuals.
Our visit in some Admarc depots which uses taxes paid by the same poor Malawians has revealed that there are some Admarc sales clerks who are taking advantage of the hunger situation to raise the price per bag to K10,000 or K12,000 from the initial price of K7,500 and such prices are offered to vendors who inturn are selling the same maize at K20,000 per bag or even beyond this price.
The visit which included depots in Mzimba like Luvwere, Kafukule and Mpherembe Admarc depot has put in open the malpractice which leaves the needy with no food as the preference of these clerks are vendors who at times buy almost all the grain or leave very insufficient for the common people leading to crumble over the little remaining grain in Admarc’ stock.
It is reported that some drivers carrying the grain sold it to vendors at Sokopo in conjunction with Admarc depot officials before the maize was offloaded at its point of sale.
Our visit has also revealed that many households in need of the grain are going for days on empty stomachs just because they can not afford the inflated prices put on the grain by vendors and on the other the insufficiency in Admarc depots which sometimes reaches the limit of less than 10kgs per person if found.
The situation has even put the attendance of learners at lower side except those schools having school feeding programs which their numbers are increasing.
Can the ministry officials or committee on Agriculture in Parliament visit some depots across the country to appreciate challenges that the citizens are facing in different Admarc depots. We believe this can help to see for themselves how these needy households are being denied their right to their own taxes through Admarc officials.
