Karonga DPP MPs, Tanzanian nationals vow to dethrone the district council chairperson over land issue
By our reporter
Some Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Members of Parliament (MPs) in Karonga as well as council officials and Tanzanian nationals who obtained the land around the boma illegally, are doing everything to dethrone the current district council chairperson Steve Simsokwe because he is a threat.
The group has since engaged some civil society organizations in the process.
Among the plan, the group through some none governmental organizations have created a fake story that Simsokwe together with his two colleagues (councilors) sold plots around the district main market to the tune of K2,400,000 illegally.
However, our investigations has found that the said plot were not sold illegally but Simsokwe blocked the Tanzanian nationals to acquire it.
Instead, Simsokwe through the district council agreed to sell the plots to Malawians who have been using the area for long time.
The development angered the Tanzanian nationals who were promised to buy the plots by some DPP MPs and some district council officials.
The truth of the story according to our finding is that the group is aware that with Simsokwe as council chairperson they will face the law.
Simsokwe is regarded as a fearless and uncorrupted person in the district.
He is a Malawi Congress Party (MCP) councilor for Chilanga ward which is in the area of DPP MP James Bond Kamwambi and become the district council chairperson this month.
Simsokwe was a renowned youth activist in the district before joining politics.
