Malawi risking a severe food crisis in 2021
By Kondanani Chilimunthaka
As Malawians are complaining of hunger that has reached an acute stage in 2020, there are fears and danger of having an alarming hunger in 2021.
Going around in many gardens you find many villagers have already started harvesting their grain for food while still in the field, while in other gardens maize didn’t do well due to lack of farm inputs such as fertilizer and obviously known that the food crisis for the next year has already started right from the garden before the grain is harvested home and reach its worst level in 2021.
When this reporter visited some areas across the country it has been found that Malawi will be at risk of hunger if authorities will not do the rightful action in time.
According to this reporter it will be difficult for those who can harvest much maize to keep some for themselves as it seems the production of the reliable cash crop of tobacco which still remains the largest cash earner crop and a mine fir malawi’s economy is low this year, while others will not even harvest for they will have already finished the maize while in the field due to the current hunger situation in the country.
It could be good for the government of Malawi and other agricultural experts to get a survey and estimate the level of Maize that will be needed in 2021 and find means of how to address the challenge even if it means extending the plea to the donor comminity if hunger related diseases and deaths are to be avoided.
Jumping a big drain is when you see it from a distance.
