MEC declares Dr Lazarus Chakwera President
Its now official that the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has declared Tonse Alliance Torchbearer in the just ended fresh presidential election Dr Lazarus Chakwera winner with 58.57 percent of total valid votes cast.
Chakwera who represented the main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP), UTM and nine other parties got 2, 604, 043 votes against Prof Peter Arthur Mutharika of Democratic Progressive party (DPP) and United Democratic front (UDF) Alliance who had 1,751,377 and Peter Kuwani of Mbakuwaku Movement for Development (MMD) who bagged 32,456 votes.
Kachale said a total of 6,859,570 Malawians registered, 4,445,659 voted representing 64.81 percent with 57,553 declared null and void.
Malawi’s constitutional court annulled last year’s controversial election, which saw Mutharika narrowly re-elected.
The judges found there had been widespread irregularities in the 21 May vote.
This is the first election to be legally challenged since Malawi’s independence in 1964. A new vote will take place within 151 days.
