NGO calls for Government to improve welfare of elderly

Founder of Friends for the elderly Mike Magelegele has urged Government to improve welfare of elderly.
Magelegele was speaking in Lilongwe as Malawi joins the rest of the world in commemorating world elderly day.
Magelegele said as Malawi joins our counterparts in commemorating the world elderly day it is a good time to remind Government on its role.
“This is the moment to remind the government of its commitment towards
the welfare of older persons, to help them end hunger and poverty for the
elderly and people of all ages. It’s a day to remember and celebrate the
older persons and thank them for their contributions.”
He said 2030 agenda and the sustainable goals (SDGs) recognize that development of Malawi will only be achiveable if it is inclusive of all ages.
He said empowering older persons in all dimesions of development,
including promoting their active participation in social, economic
and political life, is one way to ensure their inclusiveness and reduce inequalities.
The 2019 theme is aligned with sustainable development goal 10 (SDG 10) and focuses on pathways of copying with existing and preventing future-old age inequalities.
Currently it is envusaged that SDG 10 is sets to reduce inequality within-and among-countries, and aims to “ensure equal opportunity and reduce inequalities of outcome, including through measures to eliminate discrimination, and to empower and promote the social, economic and political inclusion of all, respective of age, sex, disability, race, ethnicity, origin, religion or economic or other status.
He said elderly contributions of older persons in Malawi caring for orphaned by providing much needed
household income and that older persons are pioneers of science, medicine, psychology, civil rights and so much more including wisdom.
