PAC rejects Chizuma as ACB Director
By Vincent Gunde
The Public Appointment Committee [PAC] of Parliament on Tuesday rejected Martha Chizuma to be confirmed on the appointment as Anti-Corruption Bureau [ACB] Chief.
Chizuma undergone interviews where she became successful and this made President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chkwera to appoint her as ACB Chief and the Public Appointment Committee [PAC] of Parliament was there to only confirm her appointment.
Speaking to the press before appearing in the eyes of PAC Board members, Chizuma said she was ready to take up the challenging position of ACB Director regardless of the nature of the job which comes with threats saying she is a born again Christian and God will protect her.
Chizuma said she want to make the ACB a tool of making Malawians uncomfortable with corruption practices expressing confidence that PAC will approve her appointment.
However, her rejection by PAC of Parliament has received condemnation and comments that Malawians themselves will appoint her as ACB Director because they are tired of their country failure to develop because of corruption practices which have crippled all the government systems.
The rejection of Chizuma has proved that many politicians enter into Government not for servant leadership but with the intention to steal from government coffers to enrich themselves at the expense of the poor in Malawi.
The parliamentarians are afraid of Chizuma that with President Chakwera’s philosophy of zero-tolerance in corruption the journey to Canaan will be possible with many politicians entering into prison gates to replace those that are in the country’s prison for stealing chickens the Vice President Dr. Saulosi Klaus Chilima preached to walk to freedom.
After the rejection of Chizuma, Government MPs in the PAC committee went to address a press conference which a social media commentator, Fryson Chodzi writing on his face book page described it as crybabies, they did not want Chizuma.
“It is sad that Tonse Government MPs are crying for the rejection of Chizuma, you can’t blame the chair or DPP for the outcome, briefing the press is a face saver,’’ reads the writing on the wall.
But, two Chancellor College based legal experts, Professor Edge Kanyongolo and Professor Garton Kamchedzera have been quoted in the media that President Chakwera can still resubmit Martha Chizuma’s name for the second time for considerations as ACB Director saying the law does not bar second appointment described Chizuma’s rejection by PAC of Parliament as proving rotten the Malawi society is.
Meanwhile, the Human Rights Defenders Coalition [HRDC] has announced “Bring back our Martha Chizuma’’ as ACB Director demonstrations to be held on 18th May, 2021 against the decision by PAC to reject her for the confirmation as ACB Chief.
