Service charters key to councils’ delivery of services

Women’s Legal Resources Centre (Wolrec) programs manager Gift Mauluka says local communities can access improved service delivery if district councils have service charters.

Mauluka was reacting on Monday during a full council meeting in Nsanje to an introduction of formulation of service charters to be rolled out in public sectors of health, agriculture, social welfare and judiciary in the district.

“In absence of these charters, people have been served poorly. The charters will empower rights holders to engage duty bearers for improved service delivery. The council needs such documents to ensure service providers do their duties effectively. It is high time citizens hold service providers accountable for meaning development,” said Mauluka.

He said the organisation is committed to promoting rights of citizens in the district.

In an interview, the district commissioner Dr Medson Matchaya said the initiative will support good governance and accountability efforts in the district.

“Concerned service providers will ensure people access needs with improved standards,” he said.
With financial support from Dan Church Aid (DCA), Wolrec is implementing an Enhanced Women Active Citizenship and Economic Empowerment project to enhance females to be demanding needs.
