Women Manifesto Movement leads protests against Police

By Jameson Salima

Women Manifesto Movement has demanded that Government must operationalize the police complaints authority, as per the provision in the country’s constitution.

The demand, is among the several recommendations contained in their latest petition which they presented to the country’s head of State Friday after a peaceful march.

The petition was initially scheduled to be presented through the Capital Hill, but was later delivered through lilongwe city councils office.

No reasons were given for the sudden change.

Reading the petition a renowned gender activists Emma Kaliya called upon Government to investigate what happened at Nsundwe and bring those involved to book.Kaliya said the movement observed that the non existent but legally-provided constitution was crucial in handling future complaints against the law enforcers.

The grouping comprises national and international civil society organizations that promote gender equality and the empowerment of women and youth in the country.

According to the petition, the police complaints authority will ensure independent investigation of cases involving the law enforcers.

The movement has advised president ”to issue direct and clear orders to the inspector general to act with speed and professionalism ” to avoid a repeat of the women’ rights abuses perpetrated by the law enforcers.”

The demands border on reports that the male law enforcers on oct 9 this year, committed various offences at Nsundwe, Mbwatalika and Mpingu trading Centres in Mchinji, where they allegedly raped women and defiled girls some as young as 15 years in retaliation of the death of their fellow corp who had died in course of duty within the area.

There was no immediate comment from Government side, but reciepents of the petition at the council assured the movement that the letter would be delivered to the president who is currently in Russia for official duties.
